BACKGROUND.

- kanako was born in doma to a poor family as the firstborn child - consequently, her parents were not happy about her birth as girls are not as valuable as boys and cannot inherit property. thus, they gave her the name kanako, written as 加奈子: added child.
- her parents had a boy four years later whose birth they celebrated dearly while she was sidelined more.
- kanako began working the rice fields at six years old with her mother.
- a year later, she was spotted by a man who regularly buys and sells girls from poor families to brothels. he made her family an offer they, of course, couldn't deny and they sold her to him. her family used the money to pay off their house debt.
- the man brought her to kugane and sold her to another man who owned a pleasure house. there, she began working, serving sake and food to courtesans and clients, and tending to chores while learning their ways. she was expected to be quiet and obedient, and any mistake drew the ire of the owner and the older courtesans alike.
- at eleven years old kanako was considered gifted enough to receive higher education - calligraphy, various instruments (flute, samisen, koto), poetry, dance, and how to do a proper tea ceremony.
- on the same day her virginity was sold to client for a hefty sum.
- at sixteen years old kanako started receiving her own clients, entertaining them in whatever way they wished. she became wildly popular due to her beauty, quickly rising through the ranks, and her sister courtesan began resenting her.
- her own debt with the pleasure house began increasing as the owner bought her more and more expensive clothes to please eye of her clients.
- eventually, an older man entered the establishment and bought her time but not for sexual gratification - instead, he only talked to her and offered to get her out. however, she believed it to be a trap. it took nigh a year for her to begin trusting him
- after she turned 28, they hatched a plan together. kanako had to sneak out of the red district without being noticed, and the man paid the confederacy to meet her at the harbor in kugane night to get her out at night.
- in spite of kanako's doubt, the plan proved successful and the confederacy brought her out of kugane and had a merchant ship take her to eorzea. on the way there she heard about beaconhill lighthouse in western thanalan offering lucrative work to anyone indiscriminately so once she arrived in eorzea, she set out to travel there.
- kanako stays in contact with the man that helped her through letters until they stop abruptly. it takes a few months for her to find out that he was imprisoned and then executed for treason.
